Just a few short years ago, I had never even heard of an orphan disease. An orphan disease by definition is a disease that affects a small group of individuals. As a result, symptoms tend to be confused with those of more common conditions, and even upon diagnosis, treatment options can be less readily available. That leaves the patient population as “health orphans.”
